Quoting from www.hewlettfd.org: " The Hewlett Fire Department was alerted at 10:29 pm on May 24, 2007 for an automatic alarm at 123 Everitt Ave. Chief of Department Otto Kohlmier was enroute at 10:30 pm and shortly thereafter was notified by Hewlett Fire Department dispatch that a second call was received reporting a house fire at that address. Chief Kohlmier arrived at the scene and immediately transmitted the signal for a working house fire. Heavy fire was already engulfing most of the second floor of the large, two story residence. The house was undergoing renovation so no residents were home at the time of the fire." Hewlett command first requested Ambulance 359, and the shortly adterward Engine 355. EMTs from 359 worked with other EMS units from Valley Stream, Hewlett, and the NCPD to cover medical positions. Engine 355 assisted Engine 302with its LDH, and then were put to work protecting exposures. "Additional firefighters from the Woodmere, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Inwood, Valley Stream, Meadowmere Park, Lynbrook and East Rockaway Fire Departments responded mutual aid to assist in the battle." The fire was knocked down with the combined efforts of master streams from Hewlett, LCFD, and Lynbrook FD. Units cleared in 3 hours. |

At 5am, Firecom alerted the LCFD for a reported house fire at 401 Oakland Ave. 3201 arrived onscene and was confronted with a 2 story PD with fire showing out of every window on the second floor. LCFD units arrived quickly and made a hard push with reports of 2 occupants inside. They were immediately hampered by a Colliers Mansion condition which was exacerbating the fire. LC Command requested a FAST Team from Woodmere. Once on scene, Unit 351 was put to work as an engine crew. After conditions forced all units from the building, Woodmere units were put back into service as a FAST team. The stubborn fire required the IC to request units from Inwood, Hewlett, Meadowmere Park, Valley Stream, and Engine 355 from Woodmere. After a long battle, master streams from Ladder 325 knocked the fire down, allowing units to complete the job. After 3 hours of overhaul, and additional units requested from Rockville Center, Elmont, Oceanside, and East Rockaway, 2 bodies were discovered buried in the the debris. Tired Woodmere units cleared in 4 hours. |
